Japanese Shiatsu is ideal if you don’t want to take your clothes off for hands-on bodywork. Similar to traditional Thai massage, the practitioner applies steady pressure with their palms, fingers, thumbs, elbows and knees.
Experiencing Japanese Shiatsu at Vitruvian Wellness in Steele’s Village, I lay on a sheeted queen size futon mattress with a comfortable head and chest rest, whilst Adrian Cox intuitively released areas of tension. I was required to completely let go as he also stretched my limbs, and it felt good to literally put myself in the hands of a bodywork expert.
Adrian explains that this therapy focuses on the body’s internal pathways (meridians) along which vital energy flows. Shiatsu massage is good for anybody with stress and anxiety, and/or neck, back or shoulder pain. It can also help those with chronic illness or deeper injuries – although this requires long-term weekly sessions to make a difference.
“With people who have a diagnosis from a doctor that they might be suffering for a year or more,” says Adrian, “Japanese Shiatsu will definitely speed up the healing.”
