Expert ninja warrior Brian Whitaker teaches ninjutsu which is an ancient Japanese martial art. Although this Tuesday evening class from 8-9.30pm is open to anyone, currently his students are men of all ages looking to keep fit and have a good time whilst learning close combat moves. According to Brian, stats show that ninjutsu tends to be more popular with males, but females are welcome to join his class and have done so in the past.

“Ninjutsu is a form of self-protection,” explains Brian. “There are three basic components – improving awareness, making accurate assessments and taking effective action.” He adds that just as you protect your home by locking your front door, ninjutsu offers stances that will make you prepared against anybody looking to be physically aggressive.

Even if you think that you might not need or use ninjutsu for your personal safety, the class is a great way to get active, increase flexibility and gain overall confidence through movements such as striking, grappling, throwing, break falls and rolls. Ninjutsu teaches precision and mental acuity, making it perfect for body and mind strength.

Nowadays in Japan and around the world ninjutsu is not as popular as karate or judo. So it’s reassuring that Brian is keeping alive this historical warrior tradition which he says is over 1000 years old. Brian first started learning when he was sixteen and recovering from a severed Achilles tendon. To date he’s been teaching for about 25 years.

With small classes of about 6-8 students, Brian can give generous attention to beginners whilst making sure that his ongoing students keep on the move. Dress code is black leisure wear.
