For beautiful handcrafted or handmade items, the nearest market to Belsize Park is happening every Saturday from 10-5pm at the Hampstead Community Centre, 78 Hampstead High Street, next to the flower shop.
The range of independent traders (usually at least 15 tables) includes people making jewellery, clothes, bags, hand knits, perfumes and body products such as organic skincare, fancy candles, art works and children’s wooden toys and small gifts. For food there’s usually someone selling honey, and at the entrance to the market, there’s a lovely assortment of French cheeses from the long-time company Une Normande A Londres.
In the past, In The Square has reviewed two traders who are not selling handmade items, but whose tables are well worth visiting. Myri is famous for her nearly new brands, especially sunglasses, shoes and bags, and Solange has unique inexpensive gifts, accessories for all ages, fashionable caps and socks, and some pre-loved clothes.
“We’re happy that we have traders who look out for each other, making the event a true community market; and this is reflected in the high number of regular shoppers,” says Carmen Moore who organises the market and is always open to being contacted by interested traders.
The Saturday market is situated close to the Hampstead Street Crêpes, and in the alley on the left-hand side of the market, DIJöN is serving delicious gluten-free pizzas. Although this café also sells bagels, toasties and drinks, the pizzas are making many gluten intolerant people very happy!
